Who is responsible for obesity in the US & who can change it?

13 Dec

At this point, many people may argue and come up with same and different ideas; some may agree and disagree. However, there’s not one single answer and solution for this situation. In my opinion, the US government is responsible for most of Americans gaining weight. First of all, the US government supports farmers for the production of corn; the US government supports corn rather than healthier vegetables or other products that really benefit the health of the people. It pays American farmers with the money collected from taxes in order for them to grow more corn and so it becomes cheaper for big agribusiness to buy and process them into different kinds of fast-food.

It is true that food is such a unique cultural experience because it involves everyone and it has existed forever. But what people should have to know is that corn is one of the most used ingredient in almost all of our food, if people only knew that harmful chemicals are used in order to grow corn, they will definitely want to know about the ingredients in their food before bringing it to the counter and paying for something that badly affect their health.  In the Book Omnivores’ Dilemma, Pollan claims, “…Americans eat a ton of corn every year. We don’t recognize it as corn, though, because it’s been turned into something else” (64).  According to Pollan, people just don’t recognize corn itself because factories have turned most of it into processed food.

Get to know what you are really consuming and ask yourself if it’s healthy for you and your family. For those who wonder “who may be able to change this?,” the answer is easy to say, but hard to do. In the US, what people frequently eat is the available fast-food around them, without noticing that it’s the cause of why people get sick or gain weight over time because of its ingredients. People should change the way they eat, meaning that they should know where their food comes from and how it’s made before eating it. Knowing about your food is power because it helps you change yourself and those around you.
